Northern Ireland - County Antrim

There is less confusion over Carrickfergus Castle on the northern shore of Belfast Lough (lake). It is a Norman castle besieged in turn by the Scots, Irish, English and French. It played an important military role from the early 1200s up until 1928 and remains one of the best preserved medieval structures in Ireland.
